Therapist and Evaluator/Assessor
Heather L. Dunleavy, MA, MEd, LMFT, AAMFT, ASDCS
I was educated at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina State University, and Liberty University. I have undergraduate degrees in Education and English. I hold masters degrees in English, Curriculum and Development, and Marriage and Family Therapy. Also, I am an Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist. I am a holistic, systemic practitioner who used natural, sustainable methods to help people on the Autism Spectrum realize their true potential and live their best life. I also work with the client’s entire support system to help everyone grow and develop.
I chose to become a therapist after working as a classroom educator for 21 years, because I saw that the needs of my students were not being met through the educational system or through their family system. Today, we all face a variety of emotional issues that are difficult for to express, name, and discuss. Many people feel as if no one is listening or will listen to them, especially adults on the Autism Spectrum who already struggle with communication. I want to help empower all people on the Autism Spectrum and their support systems.
I work with adults primarily; however, I also work with children and adolescents on the Autism Spectrum. I specialize in autism, depression, anxiety, and challenges that are unique to those on the Autism Spectrum. I also work with couples and families to help address issues at home to help to improve the communication skills within the family unit.
Because each client is unique, I use a variety of approaches to help build rapport, trust, understanding and coping skills. With children, I use The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and play therapy. With adolescents and adults, I use SSP, MI, CPT, and CBT. My focus is always trauma-informed: What is happening? Never what is wrong with you?
